California Edison is considering shutting off power to roughly 246,000 customers in the state as strong winds and dry conditions raise the threat of wildfires.

The shutoffs potentially affect almost 5% of Edison’s customers across six counties, including Los Angeles, Ventura, Kern, Tulare and Santa Barbara, from Wednesday through Friday. Gusty Santa Ana winds, low humidity and hot temperatures are raising wildfire risks across the region. Utilities use public safety power shutoffs to reduce the risk of their equipment sparking fires and limit potential financial liabilities.
