Demand at an Australian three-year bond auction surged to the highest since 2018 as traders bet the nation’s central bank is nearing the end if its interest-rate hike cycle.
Investors sought nearly five times the A$1 billion ($692 million) of notes maturing in April 2029 on offer on Friday, according to data from the Australian Office of Financial Management. The bid-to-cover ratio for the bond, a key measure of investor demand, reached its highest level since October 2018, the data show.
The surge in demand followed softer-than-expected jobs data on Thursday that prompted investors to further scale back bets on Reserve Bank of Australia rate hikes. Swaps now imply roughly a 22% chance of a November rate increase, with traders no longer fully pricing in a final quarter-point increase early next year, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

Philip Brown, head of research at FIIG Securities, expects strong demand for Australian bonds across the curve. “The higher unemployment is, the faster the RBA moves from hikes to cuts.”
