Poland is ready to send more troops to shore up NATO allies if those countries agree to sign contracts with its defense industry, Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

The more transactional approach toward supporting other members of the military alliance is an attempt to boost domestic weapon producers and borrows a page from the playbook already adopted by the administration of President Donald Trump, the minister told an economic forum in Sopot on Friday.

“We will be sending more soldiers to other countries on the eastern flank, but following the US example we will set conditions,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said. “We also want to have a business interest in this.”His remarks referred to Poland’s peacetime deployments to allied countries, not the forces that the country would be obliged to send in the event of a member state invoking NATO’s collective-defense clause in response to an attack.

Polish troops are already serving in the Baltic states, Romania and Turkey as Warsaw increasingly shifts from being primarily a recipient of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s security umbrella to a contributor to the defense of other members.

The country has embarked on one of Europe’s biggest military buildups since Russia invaded Ukraine, its eastern neighbor, in 2022. Warsaw is currently spending nearly 5% of gross domestic product on defense and is trying to shift the focus from buying equipment abroad, in countries including the US and South Korea, to nurturing its domestic defense industry.

The government has instructed state-owned defense holding PGZ SA to maximize its manufacturing capacity as regional security deteriorates, Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

“Poland is a very attractive defense market, but Polish industry must already work in wartime mode,” he said. “We have no time to lose.”Kosiniak-Kamysz, who serves as Poland’s deputy prime minister, also defended Poland’s willingness to borrow heavily to finance its military buildup, arguing that the cost of debt is preferable to the consequences of failing to deter a conflict. “I would rather repay loans than send young Poles to the front,” he said.
