Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar said Friday that Budapest and Kyiv agreed to build a “new foundation” for their political and economic ties.

Magyar announced the agreement in a statement on US social media company X after a first meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Brussels, where they attended an EU leaders’ summit.

Welcoming Hungary and Ukraine’s agreement to strengthen the rights of the Hungarian minority in the Zakarpattia region, Magyar said Budapest sees the Ukrainian parliament’s adoption and implementation of a minority education law as a “first step towards rebuilding mutual trust.”“I thanked the Ukrainian Parliament for its September resolution recognizing the crimes committed against Hungarians in Transcarpathia through forced labor and mass deportations between 1944 and 1946,” said Magyar further.

He went on to say that he and Zelenskyy agreed to continue ministerial-level talks, focusing particularly on improving the situation of minorities in both countries.

“We also agreed that it is in both countries’ interests to build a new foundation for our political and economic relations,” said Magyar, going on to express full solidarity with Kyiv amid the ongoing war.

“Hungary is ready to use every possible diplomatic means to help achieve a ceasefire as soon as possible and secure lasting peace,” Magyar added.

Zelenskyy said he and the Hungarian prime minister discussed key agenda items and Ukraine's progress toward EU accession, thanking Magyar for his “principled steps” and for opening two more EU negotiating clusters.

“We are working to open the remaining two by the end of the year,” said Zelenskyy, noting they discussed the diplomatic situation and efforts to end the over-four-year war.

Zelenskyy said they also discussed opportunities for cooperation between Ukraine and Hungary, as well as trade and issues related to agricultural products.

Following the meeting, Budapest and Kyiv’s top diplomats also held talks in Brussels, during which Andrii Sybiha congratulated her Hungarian counterpart “on the new chapter in our relations.”“We witness a full reset in political, economic, humanitarian, and other areas. We still have a lot on our agenda, and work continues on many important issues. But we can already say it clearly: this is a new chapter. It’s history. Together, we have proven that quiet diplomacy pays off. It is always better to focus on concrete results and deliver them,” Sybiha added.
此次会晤发生在乌克兰与匈牙利多年摩擦之后，当时在前总理维克托·奥尔班时期，匈牙利与俄罗斯保持着密切关系。
The meeting follows years of friction between Ukraine and Hungary, when Hungary possessed close ties with Russia under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
