Energy Group Ltd. said that pre-commissioning work at its Scarborough project off the coast of Western Australia remained paused after Greenpeace protesters climbed aboard the gas platform.
“Greenpeace’s actions have triggered a significant, potentially costly and entirely avoidable response,” Woodside said in a statement. The company, Australia’s biggest natural gas exporter, said it “supports a strong response by relevant authorities to enforce the law to the fullest extent.”Demonstrators slept on Scarborough on Saturday night, Greenpeace said in a statement on Sunday. Two protesters have set up temporary hanging tents on the platform while two others have returned to the Rainbow Warrior vessel, according to the statement.
Greenpeace has said that the gas project is a threat to marine ecosystems and will add to greenhouse gas emissions.
The Scarborough project is 98% complete and is on track for its first liquefied natural gas cargo in the fourth quarter, according to Woodside’s website.
