Energy Group Ltd. said commissioning work at its $12 billion Scarborough liquefied natural gas export project off the coast of Western Australia has resumed after being paused on the weekend when Greenpeace protesters climbed aboard the gas platform.
The incident involving unauthorized access to the Scarborough floating production unit has been resolved and commissioning activities have restarted, Australia’s biggest natural gas exporter said in a statement on Monday.
Demonstrators slept on the unit on Saturday night, Greenpeace said earlier in a statement. Two protesters set up temporary hanging tents on the platform while two others returned to the Rainbow Warrior vessel, according to the group.
Two men have been charged and could face a maximum penalty of 10 years’ imprisonment, according to a joint statement by the Australian Border Force, state police and National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Environmental Management Authority. They are due to appear before the Karratha Magistrates Court on Monday and investigations are ongoing, according to the statement.
Woodside said in a statement it will “cooperate with authorities to enable the law to be enforced to the fullest extent.”Scarborough is a key growth project for Woodside, which is banking on new LNG supply to help lift production and meet rising demand in Asia. The development is more than 98% complete and targeting its first cargo before the end of the year, at a time the global market remains tight amid disruption to Middle East exports.
But the project has long drawn criticism from environmental activists like Greenpeace, which has said it is a threat to marine ecosystems and will add to greenhouse gas emissions.
The activist group delivered a petition to Woodside’s headquarters on Monday, calling on the government to stop the Browse project, another LNG development in Western Australia, and save Scott Reef. It is one of Australia’s biggest environmental petitions with almost 500,000 signatures, Greenpeace said.
“Community pressure on Woodside is rising. Today we are here to show Woodside that they can’t ignore half a million people who want Scott Reef protected, not turned into an industrialized gas zone,” said David Ritter, chief executive officer at Greenpeace Australia Pacific.
