Demonstrators clashed with anti-riot police outside Colombia's National Museum in Bogota on Sunday for a second consecutive day, protesting an order by President Abelardo de la Espriella’s administration to remove more than 30 exhibits from the institution.

Protesters gathered at 11 am (1600GMT) along the central Carrera 7 and Calle 34 corridor to denounce the removal of historical artifacts, artworks and archival displays related to feminist movements, LGBTQIA+ rights and the political campaigns of former M-19 guerrilla leader Carlos Pizarro.

The demonstration escalated as masked individuals hurled blunt objects at police cordons. Officers from the Mobile Anti-Riot Squad (Esmad), now officially designated as the Dialogue and Maintenance of Order Unit (UNDMO), intervened using water cannons and armored vehicles to disperse crowds and clear blockades.

According to the Bogota District Government Secretariat, the majority of peaceful attendees dispersed as clashes broke out, though residual groups remained engaged in altercations with law enforcement into the afternoon.

The unrest follows a turbulent Saturday mobilization at the same location, where law enforcement similarly deployed water cannons to disperse protesters blocking key transit arteries.

Sunday’s rally drew prominent political, cultural and social figures including former Pacto Historico senator Maria Jose Pizarro, former Ministers of Culture Juan David Correa and Patricia Ariza, and former Environment Minister Susana Muhamad. Representative bodies from feminist, LGBTQIA+ and Indigenous organizations also joined the mobilization.

Artists, journalists, academics and cultural workers launched a nationwide petition protesting "an offensive by the current government against the 1991 Constitution and Colombia's cultural diversity." Amid the clashes, Maria Carolina Restrepo Canavera, director of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF), condemned the alleged presence of minors during the confrontations.

"The right to peaceful assembly does not justify exposing children and adolescents to hazardous environments," she said, warning that minors must not be used as human shields or brought into direct altercations with security forces.

The controversial removal of the pieces took place last Thursday following an announcement by President De la Espriella initiating a "cultural counterrevolution" across public cultural institutions.

The administration defended the measure through the Ministry of Culture, arguing that state museums must remain free of political indoctrination and apologetics for illegal groups.
