A man accused of ramming a car into an Australian MP was her family friend, his father has said.

Rod Nugent, the suspect’s father, released a statement saying his family have been friends with Ms Haines for 20 years, and promising to help police investigate the “horrific crime”.

Mr Nugent holds a master’s degree in environmental science from the University of Melbourne. In other posts, Mr Nugent said he was living with “chronic pain” and was “broke”.

Mr Nugent was disarmed and detained by Ricky Jeffries, a barber, who said: “He did have a knife... He didn’t pull it out. I just wasn’t comfortable with his movements, and so I basically just took it out of his pocket and threw it away.”Another witness told The Sydney Morning Herald that they saw the car hit Ms Haines several times.
