The donation is the latest effort in Gov. JB Pritzker’s national midterm spending strategy.

Gov. JB Pritzker is sending $1 million to Georgia Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms’ gubernatorial campaign, two people familiar with the decision granted anonymity to discuss details told POLITICO.

The donation is the latest effort by the billionaire governor and potential 2028 presidential candidate to boost Democrats’ chances in competitive races, with a particular emphasis on Black and Hispanic candidates. It’s being sent to Project Battleground, a leadership committee partnering on fundraising with Bottoms’ campaign that can legally accept donations without limits.

Bottoms is facing a massive cash disadvantage against billionaire Republican Rick Jackson, who is pouring over $100 million of his own money and has outspent Bottoms 5 to 1 in the battleground governor's race.

Jackson, a former health care industry executive, has raised $118 million combined for his race against Bottoms and his contested primary against Lt. Gov. Burt Jones, according to Georgia campaign finance records, most of that coming from his personal fortune. Bottoms’ campaign has raised $5.7 million, and Project Battleground has raised an additional $3.4 million to support Bottoms.

The race is viewed by both parties as a toss-up. An Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll released Tuesday morning found Jackson and Bottoms virtually tied with Jackson at 46% and Bottoms at 45%.

Democrats have raised concerns about the level of self-funding from Jackson. The Democratic Governors Association, which is spending at least $10 million to support Bottoms, warned in a memo sent to donors last week that the “large gap” in fundraising could sink Democratic gubernatorial candidates like Bottoms facing well-funded Republicans. Jackson’s campaign attacked Bottoms’ record on crime during her time as mayor of Atlanta.

“JB Pritzker has a history of supporting failed mayors who endanger their people with soft-on-crime policies and Keisha Lance Bottoms is clearly no exception,” Jackson campaign spokesperson Garrison Douglas said. Bottoms’ campaign did not respond to a request for comment.

The donation is the latest effort in Pritzker’s national midterm spending strategy, which is in large part focusing on helping Black and Hispanic Democrats in tough races who face a fundraising deficit. That’s led some of those Democrats to take him seriously as a 2028 candidate. If Bottoms wins, she would become the first Black woman governor in U.S. history.

It’s not Pritzker’s first time boosting Bottoms. He spoke at a fundraiser for her in Chicago earlier this month hosted by Desiree Rogers, the former White House social secretary .

Jackson’s prolific spending is helping keep his chances of victory alive despite GOP Rep. Mike Collins’ sputtering Senate campaign in the state. The main super PACs for Senate Democrats and Republicans have quietly pulled back on spending in the state and directed resources to more competitive races, and polls continue to show Sen. Jon Ossoff with a commanding lead in the race.

Asked for comment, the DGA pointed to a statement on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll that touted Bottoms’ “clear momentum” and called her a “force to be reckoned with.”
