Nordic Compass is expected to provide an update on new partners later this week, ahead of its first summit in November, when the group plans to lay out its agenda and present concrete proposals.
“No Nordic country can meet the new economic reality alone,” Benedicte Schilbred Fasmer, chief executive officer of Telenor, Norway’s largest telecommunications company, said in emailed comments. “A stronger Nordic region is also a stronger Europe.”Inspired by Mario Draghi’s report on European competitiveness, Nordic Compass is mapping out initiatives across capital markets, deep technology, defense and energy.
CIP, one of the world’s largest investors in renewable-energy infrastructure, will contribute to the alliance’s work on energy.
“The Nordic countries have a strong position in the global energy transition, which is increasingly interconnected with energy security and economic competitiveness,” Managing Partner Jakob Baruël Poulsen said in emailed comments.
Nordic Compass has already been exploring potentially far-reaching proposals, including a more unified Nordic stock market and a regional scale-up fund aimed at keeping fast-growing companies from seeking capital elsewhere. It is also considering adding critical raw materials as a fifth workstream, with a focus on expanding the region’s capacity to process minerals needed by European industry.
