Ltd. is considering force majeure options and cut earnings guidance after community opposition delayed power supply to one of its major data centers in Melbourne.

The Australian data center developer said its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization was revised to between A$245 million ($172 million) and A$265 million, down from A$385 million to A$410 million, in a statement to the Australian stock exchange.

The company is also reviewing its capital expenditure program, and placing all new development projects and land acquisitions on hold.

The earnings downgrade comes after a power delay due to Jemena Electricity Networks suspending electricity connection works in response to community and stakeholder opposition, according to the statement.

“Nextdc is considering whether relief is available to it under the force majeure and other relevant provisions of those contracts,” the company said in the filing.

The setback highlights a challenge confronting Australia’s data-center buildout, which Commonwealth Bank of Australia estimates could reach A$150 billion by 2030. The energy-hungry facilities require reliable around-the-clock electricity supply, just as the country is retiring aging coal plants and relying more heavily on variable wind and solar. Unless investment in generation, storage and grid capacity keeps pace, the planned expansion could be delayed.
