Indonesian miner PT Merdeka Gold Resources plans to raise about $559 million through a share sale, embarking on a major capital increase at a chaotic time for local markets.

The company will offer stock equivalent to up to 10% of its existing paid-up shares without pre-emptive rights, the firm said in local stock exchange filing. At Tuesday’s closing price, that would raise about $559 million, the firm said.

Merdeka Gold fell as much as 5.1% in Jakarta on Wednesday. Despite a more than 30% drop from an August peak, they are up about 17% this year, compared with a nearly 40% decline in the benchmark Jakarta Composite Index.

The company is braving severe turmoil in Indonesia’s capital markets after MSCI Inc. warned last week that the country faces the threat of a double downgrade without significant reforms. The JCI has plunged more than 10% since, while the rupiah dropped briefly below the psychologically significant level of 18,000 to the dollar.

Merdeka Gold Resources, a gold unit of Merdeka group, has been active in capital markets at home and abroad as part of plans to develop the Pani mine in Sulawesi. The firm listed depositary receipts in Hong Kong, raising $304 million through the rarely used structure.

The proposed share sale would take place within two years of a shareholder meeting approving it, Merdeka Gold said in the filing. The funds would be used to finance working capital and business development, it said.
