Germany will probably make headway this year on a reform of its pension system that will help deepen European capital markets, according to Deutsche Bank AG Chief Executive Officer Christian Sewing.
“This is the mother of all reforms,” Sewing said in an interview with Bloomberg TV in Berlin. “I hear very confident feedback from the Chancellor, but also the vice Chancellor, that they will push this through, and I think it’s one of the main tasks for the remaining three months of this year.”Germany has pledged to undertake a raft of measures to shore up its creaking pensions system, notably by leaning on financial markets. Yet criticism by some politicians of a plan to scrap an early retirement option have complicated the implementation of the wider package of reforms.
The government “needs to execute” on plans to stoke growth and Germany’s ability to compete, Sewing said. The measures announced earlier this year were “a good set of reforms” and investors will judge Germany’s leaders on their speedy implementation, he added.
The German plans may help long-standing efforts in the European Union to integrate financial markets and encourage savers to invest more, said Sewing, who spoke on the sidelines of the Berlin Global Dialogue event.
“The foundation of the European capital markets union is actually the domestic capital market and the domestic capital market in Germany is the pension reform,” he said. “We’re further ahead than ever before.”
