Central Bank Governing Council member Martins Kazaks said interest rates may have to be lifted further if consumer-price gains remain elevated, according to Econostream.
“The story of inflation being way above target is still there,” the Latvian official said in an interview published Wednesday. “If this story continues, then some more policy tightening might be necessary. But one has to be cautious because of opposing forces.”Those forces include the recent jump in bond yields, which risk weighing on Europe’s economy, Kazaks said.
“There is some extra tightening from markets,” he said. “That will slow economic growth, which might curb some of the inflationary pressures.”
Already, Kazaks described the economy and labor market as “not that strong for wage demands to be pushed again to new heights.”The ECB will next set borrowing costs on Oct. 29, with investors overwhelmingly predicting policymakers will keep the deposit rate at 2.5%.
