American investigators are working with French police on refrigerator outages in Europe amid unexplained failures at US military bases.
The collaboration follows suspected sabotage at French supermarkets earlier this month, when hackers allegedly raised fridge and freezer temperatures to 50C (122F).
About 700 supermarkets were targeted, spoiling thousands of tons of food, with extreme heat triggering fires and sprinkler systems in some cases, causing further damage.
No perpetrator has been identified, but investigators believe the hackers exploited a weakness in the internet-connected refrigeration controls.
Christopher Whyte, an associate professor of homeland security and emergency preparedness at Virginia Commonwealth University, said the American failures resembled the attacks on French supermarkets.
“They’re geographically dispersed. They’re obviously all refrigerator failures and they all happen in a pretty short amount of time,” he told The Telegraph. But he said the cause of the US outages remained unclear.
A spokesman for the US army’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) said it was “actively working with the Defence Commissary Agency and the Defence Criminal Investigative Service (DCIS) to determine the full extent of what occurred with the refrigeration units in the commissaries”.
“Army CID is also working with DCIS and French law enforcement in understanding the refrigeration outages in Europe.”
