German Chancellor Friedrich Merz restated his opposition on Saturday to any change in the "firewall" policy of isolating the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) after a number of calls in his party to try to seek ways of working together.

"Anyone who feels they have to vote for these people has no place in our Union. They have no place amongst us," Merz told a meeting of the Christian Social Union (CSU), sister party of his Christian Democrats (CDU).
