This is far from the first time that wildfires have forced schools to shift online in this part of Indonesia. In 2023, smog pushed people out of the schools for roughly a month, only a few years after the coronavirus pandemic forced people into video classrooms.

“But before that we had haze in 2019, in 2016, 2015, 2014. At the time we didn’t have Zoom – we just let it go, like a holiday,” Mr Undas said. “All this means children here are getting left behind. Their performance is lower than children their age from other regions.”In a report last week, the nonprofit group Indonesian Philanthropy Association (PFI) warned Indonesia risks creating a “lost generation” of children whose physical and cognitive abilities will be impacted forever by early and recurrent exposure to wildfire smoke.

“We are gambling with an entire generation and cannot allow this tragedy to keep repeating,” Rizal Algamar, PFI chair, said in a statement.

Anger at the situation is mounting across the country – as well as in neighbouring Malaysia and Singapore, which have been blanketed in fumes and have told Indonesia it’s not doing enough to halt the fires.

The Indonesian government insists it’s tackling the blaze, with aerial water bombing, experimental cloud seeding, and the deployment of 60,000 personnel.

“We are all trying our best,” the state secretary, Prasetyo Hadi, said on Tuesday, according to local media. “We have deployed ground troops, aircraft and volunteers to put out the fires.”But in demonstrations that spread from Jakarta to Borneo last week, protesters said this wasn’t enough. They urged Prabowo Subianto – the president, who last Tuesday claimed “the only real solution is rain” – to declare a national emergency to unlock more resources, and take stronger measures to stop slash-and-burn practices in the first place.
