‘Everyday people’ vs the 1%: Australian Greens push to raise the tax-free threshold New Greens Leader David Shoebridge wants to fund the plan by taxing “rivers of gold” in mining CANBERRA — The Greens will push to raise the tax-free earnings threshold as the party’s new leader David Shoebridge frames the Australians’ struggles as a battle between “everyday people” and “the 1%.”

When Shoebridge addresses the National Press Club on Wednesday — his first major address since replacing Larissa Waters Sept. 30. — the centerpiece of his response will be raising the tax-free threshold from $18,200 to $26,000, supplemented by a $1000 boost for Australians on income support — including pensioners, carers, students and jobseekers.

Shoebridge has moved swiftly to refocus Greens messaging around economic pressures, including blaming persistent inflation above 3% on “luxury renovations, the yachts, planes and high end entertainment that the 1% indulge in.”Until now, The Greens have struggled to seize on a voter exodus from the major parties since the May 2025 election.
