Over the last three years it has become clear that the BBC has been poisoned by anti-Semitism.
In what are by no means isolated incidents, BBC journalists who are still employed by the corporation have shown support for the Oct 7 attacks, BBC Arabic has given a platform to men who seek the mass murder of Jewish people and a primetime documentary has been narrated by the son of a Hamas official.
Yet until now the experience of Jewish people working for the BBC since the Hamas atrocities has remained hidden from view. The experience of Lucie Kon, an award-winning programme executive, has drawn back the curtain.
It seems reasonable to assume that BBC management has made a compensatory payment to Ms Kon and reedited the programmes her credit was removed from because they knew the BBC had failed her very badly. They will have feared the alternative: that an employment tribunal in which more details of the anti-Semitism Ms Kon faced – and management’s failure to deal with it – would have been highly damaging to the corporation.
As a Jewish employee of the BBC, Ms Kon faced a hostile environment in which she was told that the genocidal murder of Oct 7 should be seen “in context” and that she should “think about what drove Hamas to do what they did”. This is nothing less than a BBC manager seeking to justify Jewish babies being shot in the head, families being burned alive in their homes and mass rape and sexual torture. It is stomach-turning and yet it took place not at an extremist political rally but at our national broadcaster.
The hostility and failures of impartiality Ms Kon experienced were not isolated to one BBC manager. When Ms Kon proposed a documentary on the anti-Semitic indoctrination of children in Gaza’s schools and summer camps by Hamas, backed by months of evidence and powerful video, it was dismissed by a BBC executive as “obvious Israeli government propaganda”. Yet the senior executive involved had not even looked at the material before coming to this conclusion, according to Ms Kon’s account.
When Ms Kon raised her concerns with BBC leaders she was isolated, frozen out and eventually lost her job. This will have a chilling effect on other Jewish employees of the BBC who want to speak out about the anti-Semitism and anti-Zionist bias they have faced.
Indeed, over the last three years I have been contacted by a number of Jewish people working for the BBC who have experienced both racist abuse and an everyday drumbeat of bias when it comes to reporting on the Gaza war. In these cases they fear that speaking out will only end one way: the end of their BBC careers. They have families to support and mortgages to pay. They are trapped between utter dismay at what they experience at the BBC and their responsibilities to their loved ones. BBC: ‘Home to anti-Semites’The BBC employs thousands of people who are genuinely committed to its values of impartiality and public service.
I have worked with many of them. But it has also become home to anti-Semites and those who are undermining its journalism with an activist mission across a range of progressive causes. Many are younger employees of the social-media age who simply do not understand their duty to impartiality. But as Ms Kon’s story reveals, the malaise is much deeper than that and reaches into the corporation’s senior ranks.
As the Matt Brittin, the BBC’s new director general, has the opportunity to deal with this head-on. If the BBC’s impartiality failures continue and he fails to stamp out racism within its corridors, our national broadcaster’s very future is in peril.
