The attacker was being monitored by the Serbian security agencies as a vocal supporter of the IS group and “kept the black flag in support of the IS on his Instagram” account, Mr Dačić confirmed.

State prosecutors in Belgrade said an investigation had found that a black-clad unidentified individual armed with two knives had opened the door of a guard house in front of the embassy and had rushed at the policeman, whom it identified by the initials DS.

The prosecutors’ office said in a statement: “The unidentified person threw one knife in the direction of DS, hitting him in the left cheek. After that, DS took out his service weapon and fired several shots at the attacker, killing him on the spot.”It added that the policeman’s action had been assessed to be justified and in self-defence. The investigation was continuing, it said.
