A pair of Senate Democrats are looking into potential privacy and safety risks associated with Meta’s smart glasses amid rising concerns about the devices’ usage for non-consensual recordings and data collection that trains AI systems.
In a letter dated Wednesday and addressed to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Sens. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.) requested the tech company provide answers and documents regarding testing and risk assessments Meta conducted on the devices, as well as details on how data collected by the glasses is used.
“Meta’s professed commitment to privacy and preventing intimate image abuse rings hollow if the company cannot demonstrate meaningful steps to prevent its own products and practices from facilitating those harms,” the letter states.
Meta has faced a slew of litigation in recent years, with allegationsclaiming the glasses capture sensitive images — from sexual intimacy to children bathing — without consent. Other lawsuits accuse Meta of using the devices’ biometric data, including said private imagery, to train its AI models or build facial recognition technology.
The senators are requesting Meta respond by providing its internal human rights analysis on the tech, explaining the privacy risks it has identified and the safeguards it has implemented, and how it processes and uses the data for AI training, among other questions. Meta didn’t immediately respond to request for comment.
