The European Central Bank asked the region’s leaders to start choosing a successor to Chief Economist Philip Lane, opening the race for yet another vacancy on its Executive Board.

“I can confirm that President Antonio Costa has received the letter from President Lagarde requesting to launch the formal procedure for appointing a successor for Philip Lane as new member of the ECB Executive Board,” said a spokesperson for the chief of the European Council, who chairs summits of European Union heads of government.

While this is a procedural move to fill a job that officially becomes available from June 1, it will allow euro-area officials to negotiate Lane’s post together with those of President Christine Lagarde and Executive Board member Isabel Schnabel.

European governments had already pointed to a grand bargain, with a Nov. 26-27 summit in Brussels to discuss Lagarde’s replacement after she announced this week that she’d leave the ECB in February, almost nine months before her term ends.

Spaniard Pablo Hernandez de Cos and Dutchman Klaas Knot are the frontrunners to succeed her. France and Germany are likely to fill the other two posts to maintain their seats on the ECB’s top decision-making panel.

The move puts the onus on the Eurogroup, which comprises euro-area finance ministers and is led by Greece’s Kyriakos Pierrakakis, to discuss the issue as soon as its Nov. 9 meeting in Brussels. The result of such discussions could be a call for candidates to fill the role.
