Residents of Karwa, Kestu and Waiwayi fled the riverine Besse/Shanga area as the attacks unfolded. Local authorities say extra security forces have been deployed to the area.

A police inspector and 11 villagers were killed when an armed gang attacked communities in Kebbi State, northwest Nigeria, local reports said. The raids struck the villages of Karwa, Kestu and Waiwayi in the riverine Besse/Shanga area in quick succession. Authorities said the attackers were suspected members of groups known locally as Lakurawa and Mamudawa.
