A pro-Palestine campaigner who described Oct 7 as “an act of liberation” has been barred from entering Britain.

Andreas Malm, a Swedish academic and climate activist, said that he had received a blunt letter from the Home Office notifying him that his presence was “not conducive to the public good”.

He told Radio 4’s Today programme on Friday that he could not see “any other explanation” for the decision other than a scheduled appearance on a panel alongside Huda Ammori, a founder of proscribed group Palestine Action.

The panel he was scheduled to join on Wednesday was organised by Tribune, a Left-wing political magazine based in east London.

In a December 2023 lecture, he told an audience: “I think that what happened on the Oct 7 … was fundamentally an act of liberation.”He also described the “actor” behind the Hamas attacks on Israel, which resulted in the death of 1,200 people, as “the Palestinian resistance”. He said he had always sympathised politically with the military wing of the Popular Front of the Liberation of Palestine.

In the same speech, delivered in Stockholm, Mr Malm described the “killing of civilians” on the day as “tragic” and “deplorable”.

Alex Hearn, of Labour Against Anti-Semitism, said: “Malm has repeatedly voiced support for Hamas’s actions on Oct 7. Barring him from entering the UK was the correct decision.”‘I stand by my views’On Friday Mr Malm told The Telegraph: “I stand by everything I have said and written about Oct 7 and the Palestinian resistance.”When asked whether he thought the comments may have prompted the ban, he told the Today programme his views had been “in the public realm for a long time” and that he had visited the UK since making the remarks.

Describing his views on the Israel-Gaza war, he said: “I stand in solidarity with the Palestinian struggle for liberation and with people who suffer this repression constantly.”Mr Malm told The Telegraph: “ I have received no indication that these statements and positions – laid out in a book available in any good British bookshop – are the reason for this travel ban; most recently I spoke about climate politics in the ‘How the Lights Get In’ festival in the UK in May and faced no trouble.
