Donald Trump said he would be willing to offer protective pardons to Elon Musk and close aides if Democrats take control of Congress after the midterm elections.

The president in an interview dismissed a suggestion that Democrats would move to nationalize Musk’s Space X, but said he would “protect” the billionaire entrepreneur and any aides who were targeted by Congressional investigators, including Edward Coristine, who was part of Musk’s DOGE project to slash government programs. Trump confirmed that could mean preemptive pardons if necessary.

“I would if I needed to, sure,” he told conservative commentator Miranda Devine on her “Pod Force One” podcast. “I would not even think about.”Former President Joe Biden issued protective pardons to his son, Hunter Biden, and several government officials who may have been targeted for retaliation by a second Trump administration. Trump mentioned that precedent as justification for his own pledge to protect aides.

Musk has spent hundreds of millions of dollars supporting Republicans in the midterms and Friday said on X that maintaining a GOP majority in the Senate was key to stopping a “permanent one-party state” under Democrats.
