Mr El-Sayed held a seven-point lead over Mr Rogers and enjoyed the backing of 95 per cent of likely Democratic voters, according to CNN.
But the spat now threatens a Democratic win in Michigan in a state that holds Republicans’ best chance of flipping a senate seat.
“The Democrats have a more than 50 per cent chance of winning back control of the Senate,” Jonathan Monten, a political science professor at University College London, told The Telegraph.
“But if her endorsement costs the Democratic Party the Michigan Senate race, and Democrats don’t do as well as projected in some of the other Senate races around the country, it could cost the Democratic Party a majority of the Senate.
“The way the US Senate is structured is that if each party has 50 seats and there’s a tie in the Senate, that the tie-breaking vote is held by the vice president. So it would, in effect, restore Republican control to the Senate.”Prof Monten said the debate over Israel and Palestine was fracturing the party, with divisions increasingly rooted in moral questions rather than policy differences. He added that a similar rift was emerging among Republicans.
“It’s not clear why it’s such an outsized issue,” he said. “You have a wing of the Democratic Party that sees a very strong moral case for supporting the Palestinian cause.”Dr Newman said the Israel-Palestine issue was the most important issue the Democrats needed to solve before the 2028 presidential election.
“From the 2026 vantage point it is too early to tell where this lands,” she said. “But the progressive moderate fault line and the various implications for policy and leadership will be the most important hurdle Democrats need to clear.”However, Claire Brady, the principal Americas analyst at the Sibylline strategic risk consultancy, told The Telegraph the spat in Michigan was unlikely to have a larger impact as it mainly centred around personal grievances and “ego”.
Instead, we assess that the wider Democratic Party will take moderate steps to re-evaluate the US’s relationship with Israel in the coming years, this is underscored by many candidates refusing to take AIPAC (American Israel Public Affairs Committee donations),” she said.
“The party’s current focus on unity against Trump, and the Democratic establishment’s embrace of El-Sayed, undermines any prospect of a Schumer vs AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez)/El-Sayed showdown.
“However, Schumer’s influence is likely to wane in the coming years, though this is indicative of a wider party movement towards younger and recently proven politicans such as state governors and the likes of Senator Mark Kelly and Jon Osoff to lead the party into a new era, rather than solely the influence of DSA (Democratic Socialists of America)-aligned candidates.
“Nevertheless, as national sentiment proves that US support for Israel is waning, the policy issue will almost certainly come under more scrutiny in the coming years.”
