Since joining The Telegraph in 2024, she has covered major international stories, including the Russia-Ukraine war, conflicts in the Middle East and US politics 6:57pm GMT In the northern corner of the deep-blue state of New York, Donald Trump has found one of his most stubbornly loyal allies.

Sticker mogul, Maga rapper and former boxer Anthony Constantino is the wildcard GOP candidate in the race for a once-safe Republican Party seat that has turned into an unexpected battleground for the midterms.

For much of the last 150 years, New York’s 21st congressional district has been considered a Republican stronghold. It is now at risk of swinging blue at a time when control of Congress will be decided by a handful of seats.

Mr Constantino’s central message is that Democrats are “destroying” New York, they are single-handedly responsible for the state’s “mass exodus”, and voters should mobilise to end the “domination of Leftist thinking”.

Mr Constantino, unlike some Republican candidates, has not distanced himself from Mr Trump In an interview with The Telegraph, the Trump-backed businessman and potential rising GOP star cast himself as an antidote to what he sees as greedy career politicians.

“I’m just another political outsider that is cut from the same cloth as the president,” he said. “We need more people involved in politics that are sacrificing to make the country better.”Mr Constantino, 44, who caught the White House’s attention by erecting a 12ft-high “Vote for Trump” sign atop his sticker factory’s roof during the 2024 presidential race, has run a self-funded and eccentric campaign.

He has a distinct Trumpian flair and showmanship. He speaks off the cuff, with unscripted and sometimes outlandish statements. He put out a rap album entitled Thank You President Trump and debated an inflatable chicken put in place of his Democratic opponent. Trump ‘a very good friend’Mr Constantino, who at the age of 40 embarked on a brief pro boxing career in Mexico, was a former Democrat who switched parties in 2024.

Even as Mr Trump’s approval ratings sank to historic lows, dragging down Republicans on the ballot in races across the country, Mr Constantino refused to distance himself. In a video message on Thursday, the president thanked him for his loyalty, describing him as a “very good friend of mine”.

But Mr Trump’s emphatic endorsement and deployment of JD Vance, the vice-president, to stump for Mr Constantino is perhaps more of an indication that the GOP senses weakness.

In the deeply rural district that stretches across the Adirondack mountains and up to the Canadian border, Republicans outnumber Democrats by more than 80,000. Mr Trump and Elise Stefanik, the retiring six-term incumbent, won it by more than 20-point margins in 2024.

A recent Siena University poll showed Mr Constantino trailing four points behind his Democratic rival, Blake Gendebien, a local dairy farmer.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report has also shifted the race’s rating from “solid Republican” to “likely Republican” and now “lean Republican”. The Democrat campaign apparatus added the 21st district to its Red to Blue programme this month.

Across the country, Republicans are pouring money and resources into fighting more than three dozen House races in historically “safe” seats.

In the closely divided Congress, Democrats need to net at least four Senate seats in the midterms to take back control. They are expected to win the House.

The party has traditionally struggled to compete in rural districts. But economic strain, driven by rising energy costs, has hit agricultural heartlands hard, creating discontent over Mr Trump’s policies. In the 21st district, the ongoing trade war with Canada has added to local troubles. ‘It’s a chaotic environment’“I think Anthony Constantino wins,” said Marc Molinaro, a former New York representative,. “He has tapped into a populism that people are embracing… He is unconventional, because he is new, and he’s jumped into it with all of his heart and all of his money.”“There is an uneasiness; it’s a chaotic environment, but that’s the nature of a midterm,” he added.

Mr Constantino has won the endorsements of heavy-hitters like GOP House speaker Mike Johnson, as well as boxing superstar Mike Tyson and the National Rifle Association.

Former boxing champion Mike Tyson turned out to support Mr Constantino Despite previously referring to himself as “The Trump of upstate New York” in an interview, Mr Constantino insists he is appealing to every “common-sense” voter.

He has poured $17m (£13m) of his own money into his campaign and champions the fact he is beholden to no special interests. “No strings attached. Anthony Constantino is nobody’s man but yours,” one of his adverts reads.

In Trumpian fashion, he spent most of the interview attacking his political opponents and critics. There was less substance when it comes to his policies.

Mr Constantino has previously called Zohran Mamdani, New York City’s first Muslim mayor, a “wannabe terrorist”. There is no evidence Mr Mamdani has ties to terrorism.

Asked about this claim, he repeated it, calling the young mayor a “terrorist 2.0”.

Row with NY’s Republican Party He has ruffled feathers in the Republican Party and is still feuding with New York’s state GOP, which has refused to endorse him.

Mr Constantino said he did not care, dismissing it as a failing organisation. “It’s complacent; like any organisation that has been around for a long time, it can deteriorate. It’s been losing to Democrats for too long.”A New York GOP insider, who requested anonymity, said there were legitimate concerns among the more traditional Republicans of the 21st district. “They will show up and vote for him, but a lot of them will wish he was more conventional.”Mr Constantino has no plans to conform. “I speak freely…I say what I think is important to be said to people,” he said.

Nor will he ever abandon Mr Trump. “We need more people in politics like President Trump and myself that are already successful that are clearly sacrificing to fight for our country.”
