It means products such as “vegetarian steak” will need to be renamed when the rules come into force three years from now. The rules will also probably affect manufacturers of meat-flavoured snacks, although, as things stand, veggie “burgers” and vegan “sausage” rolls will be spared.

Under a compromise struck by EU governments and members of the European Parliament, the banned terms refer to specific cuts or terms or species of animals. Sausages and burgers were deemed to represent a shape rather than a specific animal. Animal rights campaigners have criticised the new laws as unnecessary.

Dawn Carr, of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, said: “If lawmakers were not kowtowing to industry but being serious about truthful food labels, they’d require dairy milk to be labelled ‘cow lactation fluid’, eggs ‘chicken ova’, and meat ‘flesh’.

“It doesn’t matter to animals what we call vegan foods; it matters only that we choose them over the fleshy, bloody alternatives.”The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) said it supported the UK-EU deal because it would ease barriers to trade and reduce red tape. However, it warned that British concerns about planned laws should be given due consideration.

“The deal will mean that all businesses will need to comply with the EU’s food laws, whether they trade with the EU or not, and some of these will be new laws which have come into force since Brexit,” said Kate Halliwell, chief scientific officer at the FDF.

“Meat protections are an example of a new EU rule that UK businesses will need to comply with, but which the UK was not involved in developing. Moving forward it is important that UK interests are considered in EU decisions.”

Policy could ‘stifle’ plant-based sector She added: “There’s a risk this specific policy could stifle growth in the UK’s plant-based sector, while bringing little benefit for consumers. We will keep working with government to ensure the needs of UK businesses are represented in current and future EU policy making as we transition to these new regulatory conditions.”Quorn, which sells vegetarian steak, Beyond Meat and Linda McCartney foods were among a group of plant-food manufacturers calling on Brussels to abandon the labelling rules.

A Government spokesman said: “We will not comment on hypothetical scenarios or speculation. A food and drink deal could deliver up to £5.1bn a year for the UK economy, slashing the costly red tape that only helps drive up supermarket prices and stifle trade.”British negotiators are understood to have secured small carve-outs from alignment in the reset talks. They include a transition period that would allow UK gene-edited crops to continue being developed until EU rules are updated.

A draft joint statement for the UK-EU summit in Brussels, which is subject to change and has not yet been signed off by Britain, celebrates the conclusion of the food and drink deal.
