US House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries formally sought support Wednesday for his candidacy to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives following Democratic victories in the midterm elections.

In a letter to incoming members of the 120th Congress, Jeffries celebrated the party's electoral success, declaring that “America is back” and called for a new political direction focused on affordability, accountability and American values.

"I write to humbly request your support in connection with my candidacy to serve as the next Speaker of the House of Representatives," he said.

Jeffries pledged to prioritize lowering living costs, reversing Medicaid cuts, restoring food assistance funding, extending Affordable Care Act tax credits and eliminating Trump-era tariffs. He also called for an end to the war in Iran, which he blamed for rising gasoline prices.
