"Data centers in space looking pretty appealing right now": With his characteristic sense of humor, Elon Musk, the SpaceX chief who lives in Texas, reacted to Democrats' victories in Tuesday's midterm elections, particularly that of Gina Hinojosa, who was elected governor of Texas after campaigning against the proliferation of data centers in the state.

In Georgia, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms, also elected governor, voiced support for a pause in their development, while Amy Acton, Ohio's newly elected governor, backed a "conditional moratorium." With the "blue wave" sweeping through states where these facilities – crucial to the development of artificial intelligence – have become increasingly controversial, Musk joked that space might soon offer an escape.

The shock was most pronounced in Texas. Hinojosa traveled to Amarillo, a small town lost in the Texas prairie, to denounce Big Tech's grip on the region. Her campaign capitalized on residents' frustration with a fait accompli in a state where the right to do business is absolute, there is near-universal freedom to drill on one's land, and environmental regulations are lax. An analysis of counties where data centers have been built showed a surge in Democratic support. In the two counties encompassing Amarillo, the Democratic candidate won more than 40% of the vote, a remarkable achievement in this ultra-Republican stronghold where, in 2024, no Democrat even dared to run.
