Fox News’s Jesse Watters on Wednesday said the Republicans’ election coalition fell apart in this year’s midterms, with Democrats winning both the House and Senate.
“If you're going to make people who are young, struggling, living paycheck to paycheck, have to pay more for stuff and make it harder for them to climb the ladder, it's not going to go well,” Watters said on Fox News’s “The Five.”“The only people he really won are people over 65, and those are people who have a home, invested in the stock market, and can kind of see the big picture, but the coalition's totally collapsed,” he added, referencing President Trump. “I mean, we lost whites, whites. You can't do that, if you're a Republican. Men, Hispanics, big time, and so it's going to take a while to put the coalition back together because it was in the heartland.”
Watters’s comments follow a rough election day for Republicans, in which the party lost both chambers of Congress and struggled in places where they were historically successful. Democrats are projected to grow their caucus in the House from 214 members to 262, while their Senate caucus is projected to grow from 47 members to 55, according to Decision Desk HQ (DDHQ).
Republicans faced an uphill battle in this year’s elections, with concerns about the cost of living, Trump’s struggling approval rating and the unpopular war in Iran creating obstacles for the GOP. According to a polling average from DDHQ, Trump’s approval rating a day before the midterms was at 38.4 percent, while his disapproval rating was 58.7 percent.
