The head of the Justice Department’s National Security Division and the US attorney handling a sweeping probe of President Donald Trump’s adversaries resigned Friday.

Southern Florida US Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones stepped down following a tumultuous tenure in which he oversaw a so-called grand conspiracy probe that hasn’t produced indictments. The head of the department’s National Security Division, John Eisenberg, also submitted his resignation Friday. Politico first reported his exit.

Attorney General Todd Blanche announced both exits on X, moving the tally up to three Senate-confirmed Trump DOJ officials who’ve stepped down in the days immediately after Democrats swept the midterm elections. Civil Rights Division head Harmeet Dhillon stepped down Thursday.

“We are grateful for Jason’s leadership in combatting violent crime, drug trafficking, sex trafficking, and transnational crime, including the indictment of Raúl Castro,” Blanche wrote on X. “Jason has served the Department multiple times over his distinguished career, and we thank him for his service to this country.”

Blanche on social media credited Eisenberg with “strengthening our nation’s ability to address threats, both foreign and domestic.”But behind the scenes, Blanche was frustrated with Eisenberg’s handling of media leak investigations, among other issues, and forced him out of the role, according to senior administration officials.

Reding Quiñones, a former line prosecutor in the Southern District of Florida, was the first Trump-appointed US attorney confirmed by the Senate in mid-2025, and has since led an office that’s experienced significant attrition of veteran prosecutors.

Yara Klukas, who has been serving as first assistant US attorney for the Southern District of Florida, will take over the job in an acting capacity, according to a person familiar with the matter.

The department plans for the probe into whether former government officials years ago conspired to undermine President Donald Trump to continue under Klukas’ leadership, said the person, who asked not to be identified due to the sensitivity of the matter.

This investigation reviewing actions spanning multiple administrations and several DOJ special counsels’ offices faced widespread criticism due to perceptions the office was carrying out Trump grievances without clear evidence of criminality. Multiple prosecutors on the investigation team have recently resigned.

Reding Quiñones’ early efforts to get the probe started last year were marred when two assistant US attorneys were effectively pushed out of the office after they’d been asked to join the investigative team. This led to fear and low morale inside the office, and further prosecutor exits, Bloomberg Law reported last year.
