Jeff Overs 30 September 2026, 02:04 BST The front pages on Wednesday give their verdicts on Andy Burnham's Labour conference speech.

The Daily Mail calls his announcement on the triple lock "Burnham's triple shock" and says his address was the "most left-wing speech" by a Prime Minister since the 1970s. The Sun is also scathing - calling it a "locky horror show"

The Daily Telegraph says the plan "sets up a major battle with the Conservatives and Reform UK." Despite potential savings from changing pensions, The Financial Times says "big tax rises" are expected to be needed to pay for a proposed national care service.

The Times calls Burnham's overall vision, including reopening the Brexit deal and reforming the voting system, a "high-stakes gamble" to win Labour another term in office.

The Daily Express accuses him of betraying Brexit The Guardian believes Burnham has "staked his future" on the public backing his "radical progressive policies" The Daily Mirror pictures him looking emotional next to the headline: "I will build a Britain my Dad would be proud of". The detailed assessments are left to the inside editorials.

The FT's places Andy Burnham " among the most gifted communicators of the current political generation" But it describes his speech as "more a manifesto" for the next election, than an "urgent action plan". The Times's leader article says the PM's announcements "hold out the possibility of a Labour-Liberal Democrat alliance." The Guardian comes to a similar conclusion, noting he signalled "goodwill" to Lib Dem and Green voters "whose tactical support may be crucial". Nigel Farage pulls no punches in his commentary for the Mail.

The Reform leader calls changing the triple lock a "betrayal", and argues the Labour health secretary who helped found the NHS, Nye Bevan, would be "spinning his grave".

The prime minister himself takes aim at the water industry in a piece he's penned for the Mirror. He calls the sector a "leaking monument to everything that went wrong with privatisation". Burnham says his pledge to "take back control of water" will restore "hope that our children can swim in rivers and seas that are clean, not clogged with filth."
