By Hadriana Lowenkron President Donald Trump hailed an effort to automatically enroll every eligible American child in his Trump Accounts, showcasing the investment vehicles as he seeks to boost support for his economic agenda ahead of the midterm elections.

“Now every member of the next generation will have an investment account and will benefit from our booming economy, ” Trump said at a White House event on Wednesday.

While the US Treasury Department announced earlier this month that it had automatically enrolled all eligible Americans under 18 in the program, Wednesday’s event allowed Trump to spotlight one of his signature policy initiatives — one that he sees as part of his legacy and has touted as a way to help Americans build wealth.

The president said eight million accounts have been created since the Trump Accounts officially launched on July 4, adding that with the auto enrollments, “we’re building on that success by 70 million accounts of children across America.”He said over $4.5 billion has been deposited in the accounts since the July launch.

“Very simply, this money is your child’s future,” Trump said. “Now, they’ll be potentially very rich.”The government-backed savings initiative was created under last year’s tax and spending package, providing children born from 2025 through the end of 2028 — the years spanning the president’s second term — with a $1,000 seed contribution from the government. Parents and relatives, as well as employers, can contribute into the account, which cannot be accessed until a child turns 18.

Trump has regularly touted commitments from corporations and billionaires to the initiative, including from Michael and Susan Dell and Bridgewater Associates founder Ray Dalio, highlighting both how Wall Street has embraced the idea and its importance to the president’s election-year messaging.

Trump and his Republican Party are at a precarious point politically, with less than four weeks until Election Day and polls showing the president’s ratings at record lows spurred by discontent over the rising cost of living and the war in Iran. Affordability concerns have become the overriding issue of the midterm vote, as Americans say they are being squeezed by high costs for groceries, healthcare, energy and housing.

Even as Trump has taken some steps to ease those price pressures, he’s insisted the economy is soaring under his leadership, pointing to stock market rallies even though voters are more focused on inflation and wage growth.

Trump again touted the market’s performance on Wednesday, saying he wished he had started the program when he first came into office.

In July, during another event to tout the investment vehicles, Trump rang the opening bell for the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq from the Oval Office, flanked by a number of prominent executives.
