Former UN human rights chief Navanethem “Navi” Pillay has won this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

The South Africa-born jurist was recognised for her efforts to promote peace and international law. The announcement was made by the Norwegian Nobel Committee in Oslo on Friday.

Pillay, 85, has served as a judge in South Africa, at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and the International Criminal Court. She was UN High Commissioner for Human Rights from 2008 to 2014.
皮莱还曾担任联合国巴勒斯坦被占领土问题调查委员会主席。该委员会去年得出结论：以色列在加沙实施了种族灭绝行为。以色列则称该报告“荒谬至极”。
Pillay was chair of the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory that concluded last year that Israel has committed genocide in Gaza. Israel dismissed the report as “scandalous”.

Pillay has held states and national leaders accountable and brought hope to victims of violence and conflict, and demonstrated a firm moral compass in her long career, the Norwegian Nobel Committee said.

“A common thread runs from her early work defending Nelson Mandela and others who stood up against apartheid to her service as a judge in some of the key international court cases of our time,” the committee said.

Under Nobel rules, however, the prize itself cannot be transferred to another person. Trump - who is waging a war against Iran - has long coveted the prize and repeatedly said he deserves it.
