Israel’s Foreign Ministry on Friday fumed over what it described as the “grotesque weaponization” of the Nobel Peace Prize after the award was won by former International Criminal Court (ICC) judge Navanethem Pillay.

“If there were an award for lies, hatred, and blood libels, Navi Pillay wouldn’t just be a contender. She’d be a frontrunner. Her role in the relentless, politically motivated demonization of Israel and promotion of the genoLIE speaks volumes,” the Israeli Foreign Ministry wrote on social media. “Awarding Pillay the Nobel Peace Prize isn’t a recognition of justice. It’s the grotesque weaponization of an award to legitimize anti-Israel hatred and prejudice.”Pillay was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her contributions to enlarging the scope and impact of international law. She recently oversaw a United Nations report that concluded that Israel committed genocide in Gaza.

The September report by a team of independent experts commissioned by the U.N. Human Rights Council concluded “the Israeli authorities and Israeli security forces have the genocidal intent to destroy, in whole or in part, the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.”“The Commission finds that Israel is responsible for the commission of genocide in Gaza,” Pillay said in a press release.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu similarly criticzed Pillay receivving the prize in a post on social media, saying the Nobel Peace Prize committee “has lost its moral compass.”“It has awarded its highest honor to a bigot who built her career around inventing and propagating blood libels against the one and only Jewish state,” he added.

Netanyahu also claimed that Pillay’s “proudest achievement was to legitimize a corrupt prosecutor,” referring to former ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan.

Khan was removed from his post after sexual misconduct allegations from a female aide surfaced. The court’s 125 member states voted to remove Khan but the allegations against the former chief prosecutor became entwined with the court’s investigation into the war in Gaza, experts said at the time, according to the Associated Press.

Hours after the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded, the U.S. imposed sanctions against the ICC which has attempted to pursue war crimes cases against the Trump administration, American servicemembers and Israel.

ICC President Tomoko Akane, who was sanctioned by the Trump administration in August, stated the court would continue to investigate and prosecute war crimes and crimes against humanity.
