Once again, Donald Trump has missed out on the Nobel Peace Prize. Worse still, from the US president's perspective: The person who edged him out, Navanethem Pillay, embodies everything he rejects. After a long career as a lawyer and judge in her home country of South Africa, and then at the highest international judicial institutions, the 85-year-old judge has come to symbolize the current struggle between international law and the use of force.
On Friday, October 9, when announcing its decision, the Norwegian Nobel Committee honored a woman who, "with exceptional courage and integrity, had led the way towards a more comprehensive legal order." The committee said it awarded her "for her efforts to promote peace and international law" at a time when "judges are sanctioned, and their institutions are attacked." In a statement, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres praised the decision, calling Pillay "a champion of international law and human rights." She "has been (...) a steadfast, independent voice of justice amidst some of the most historic international legal cases of our time."
