Chinese and European Union representatives agreed to explore cooperation in areas including new energy and artificial intelligence during their just concluded trade talks, which Beijing described as “equal, professional and constructive”.

The two economies “have huge cooperation potential in new energy, AI, services trade, the digital economy and green low-carbon fields”, China’s Ministry of Commerce said in an interpretation released on Saturday, following the second round of China-EU trade talks in Beijing on Thursday and Friday.

Both sides reaffirmed their positioning as key trading partners and agreed to handle economic and trade differences within the WTO framework, promoting “balanced and forward-looking” trade ties, the ministry said.

“Both parties believe the [trade consultation] mechanism is operating smoothly and efficiently. The successful convening of the second regular meeting marks a new starting point, not an end point,” it said.

They held “in-depth” discussions on electric and hybrid vehicle trade and “prevented the situation from escalating”, with the EU set to advance its minimum import price mechanism and review procedures in the EV anti-subsidy case, it said.
