A principal and a teacher were shot and wounded at a middle school in Aubagne, southern France, on Monday, Education Minister Edouard Geffray said.

The principal, 53, was shot in the right hip, while the 37-year-old teacher was wounded in the thigh, French broadcaster BFMTV reported.

Their injuries were not life-threatening, according to a source close to the case cited by the broadcaster. A 14-year-old student at the school was arrested on suspicion of carrying out the shooting, BFMTV reported. An investigation into attempted murder has been opened, the broadcaster added. No students were injured, Aubagne Mayor Jean-Pierre Squillari said. The shooting was unrelated to high school protests taking place in France, according to local reports.
