Donald Trump boasts. Vladimir Putin remains silent. True to form, the Russian president did not utter a word for three days after his American counterpart announced on Friday, October 9, a "deal" on diesel, followed by an announcement on Sunday of an energy ceasefire agreement between Kyiv and Moscow.
Between these two statements, Trump openly expressed what Putin thinks: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky "chose not to" end the war, declared the US president on Saturday, who "suggested" that Ukrainians elect "a new leader who can make a deal." In effect, that's what Moscow wants: an end to Ukrainian drone strikes on Russian refineries and the replacement of Zelensky with a more accommodating leader.
But Trump's announcement of an energy ceasefire doesn't align with Putin's plans. For over a year, the Kremlin had stalled negotiations by refusing any temporary end to fighting, arguing that a pause would allow the Ukrainian army to regroup. Moscow demanded a comprehensive peace agreement to "eliminate the root causes" of the conflict – in other words, an agreement on Moscow's terms. Trump, therefore, has once again sowed confusion, surprising Kyiv and prompting silence in Moscow.
