Admittedly, that lesson is a bitter one, even though it is strikingly simple: The Israeli army can no longer claim to guarantee its people's security alone, despite having overwhelming military superiority and an unrivaled arsenal in the Middle East, including a monopoly on nuclear weapons.

The October 7 bloodshed would never have occurred if the Gaza Strip had been part of a Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel. But instead, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu chose to deepen the divide between the West Bank – which was left prey to Israeli settlers –and the Gaza Strip, subjected to a blockade. He was convinced that he had trapped Hamas and its supporters within Gaza's closed borders, thereby burying the Palestinian question.

That cynical illusion shattered three years ago, when Palestinian commandos invaded Israeli territory, killing 1,221 people – two-thirds of whom were civilians – and taking 251 hostages. Since then, Netanyahu has quashed any investigative commission that would inform his compatriots about the collapse of security and intelligence on the deadliest day in Israel's history. Instead, he has plunged the country into an endless cycle of wars – in Gaza, of course, but also in the West Bank, Lebanon, Iraq, Iran, Syria and Yemen.
