TOKYO -- More Vietnamese nationals live in Japan than Koreans, according to the latest census data, becoming the second-largest foreign population behind only the Chinese.
2025年的统计数据显示，持有日本国籍的越南人数量达到609,238人，较2020年增长了59%。这一群体占日本外国人口总数的15.9%，占比提升了1.9个百分点。
There were 609,238 Vietnamese people in Japan, according to the 2025 count based on citizenship, up 59% from the previous 2020 census. That demographic now makes up 15.9% of Japan's foreign population, up 1.9 percentage points.
三菱UFJ研究咨询公司的南田步美指出，越来越多的越南人获得了面向工程师、人文领域专家以及国际服务业从业者的居留资格。
An increasing number of Vietnamese people hold residence status designated for engineers, specialists in humanities or for those in international services, according to Ayumi Minamida of Mitsubishi UFJ Research and Consulting.
与此形成对比的是，过去五年间在日韩国人数量减少了8.3%，降至398,495人。其中65岁及以上的韩国人比例上升了2.7个百分点，达到30.6%，这一数值也高于日本全国平均水平29.4%。
Meanwhile, Korean people living in Japan decreased 8.3% in that five-year span to 398,495 people. The proportion of Koreans aged 65 and older rose 2.7 percentage points to 30.6%. This share exceeds Japan's overall figure in that age group of 29.4%.

The latest census shows a total of 3.84 million foreigners living in Japan, making up 3.1% of the population. Both figures are record highs.

The Chinese diaspora remains the largest foreign population at 923,013 people, an 18% increase since 2020. But the growth of the Southeast Asian population has been particularly noticeable. The population from Myanmar grew nearly sixfold to 163,132 people. The Indonesian population quadrupled to 226,290 people. The majority of people tracing their roots to Southeast Asia are in the working-age population, which spans 15 through 64.
