It was the latest episode in a battle between Justice Alexandre de Moraes of Brazil's highest court, the Supreme Federal Court (TSF), and the Bolsonaro clan. On Thursday, October 8, the judge canceled the passport of Eduardo Bolsonaro, the brother of presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, and ordered his arrest. "De Moraes is doing this solely to, once again, stir up trouble," Flavio Bolsonaro said during his weekly YouTube livestream.

"It's no coincidence that we have nearly 50 senators in favor of removing judges." In June, former MP Eduardo Bolsonaro, who had moved to the United States, was sentenced to four years in prison for seeking the support of US President Donald Trump to pressure Washington into imposing economic sanctions on Brazil, at a time when the TSF was preparing to convict his father, former far-right president Jair Bolsonaro, for attempting a coup d'état.

The Bolsonaro family has made no secret of its desire for revenge against the TSF. Their top priority is removing judges perceived as hostile, starting with de Moraes, who oversaw this case and became prominent during Jair Bolsonaro's presidency for opposing a host of presidential decrees and for launching investigations targeting the government as early as 2019.
