Iowa Senate candidate Josh Turek (D) and Rep. Ashley Hinson (R-Iowa) are set to clash in their second debate on Tuesday as they fight to succeed retiring Sen. Joni Ernest (R-Iowa).
The debate will offer the candidates a chance to reiterate their stances on the Iran war and fuel prices, which proved to be a focal point of their first debate last week.
WHO 13, a Des Moines news station owned by The Hill’s parent company, Nexstar Media, will host the debate. Moderated by WHO 13’s Amanda Krenz and KCAU’s Tim Seaman, it will focus on topics important to Iowa voters, according to Nexstar, such as immigration, education, health, agriculture and technology.
During the first debate, the pair notably highlighted their bipartisan records and times they broke from their respective parties — particularly Turek’s vote to criminalize some immigration violations and Hinson’s work with former Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).
A new survey from Emerson College Polling and The Hill released late last week had Hinson leading Turek and Libertarian candidate Thomas Laehn. Hinson notched 47 percent support, while Turek received 45 percent. Her lead is within the survey’s margin of error. Laehn received 2 percent support, and 7 percent of voters were undecided.
Laehn will not be participating, as he failed to meet Nexstar’s qualifying requirements.
Turek has garnered support from establishment Democrats, including former President Obama. In a video from the Turek campaign released in July, he battled the former president in a game of “IOWA” — a spin on the basketball game “HORSE.”He has rejected support from former Vice President Harris, as with many red state Democrats, and has put focus on rising prices amid the ongoing war in Iran.
“We’re looking at diesel prices being at an all-time high as our farmers are going into harvesting time and leading to a furthering increase of input costs, like fertilizer,” Turek said during the first debate, adding Iowa farmers are telling him it affects their bottom lines.
Hinson has had to balance her links to President Trump amid his historically low approval ratings.
She called for the war in Iran to end, saying in the first debate that she wanted a quick end to prevent the further loss of American troops.
“I don’t want this to be a forever war, so I want to make sure we do everything we can,” Hinson said. “I trust in our U.S. military, the greatest fighting force in the world, to bring this to a close as quickly as possible, because I know people are getting squeezed.”
Decision Desk HQ, a partner of The Hill, stated on Monday that Hinson is “narrowly favored” over Turek. The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan election handicapper, rates the race as a “toss-up.”
