NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said on Thursday that the alliance would continue to work closely with its allies in the Black Sea region to strengthen deterrence and defense capabilities following a series of reported drone attacks on commercial vessels.

In a post on US social media platform X, Rutte said he held a meeting with Bulgarian Prime Minister Rumen Radev and Romanian President Nicusor Dan to discuss security in the Black Sea and the latest attacks on commercial shipping.

He said NATO had strengthened its posture along the alliance’s eastern flank, including by increasing counter-drone capabilities.

"NATO will continue to work closely with our Allies in the Black Sea, adjusting our deterrence and defence posture as needed," Rutte said.

The meeting came amid reports of drone attacks on vessels in the western Black Sea region.

On Tuesday, two merchant ships were struck by drones farther south along Bulgaria’s coast, with one of the vessels sinking and 11 crew members reported missing.
