Progress toward a US-Mexico tariff deal has stalled after opposition from Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the Wall Street Journal reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the talks.
报道指出，原本美墨双方即将达成协议：美国将降低对进口钢铁、铝材及汽车的关税，作为交换墨西哥也需作出相应让步。但由于双方在汽车与金属产品关税问题上存在分歧，谈判进程随之放缓。
The US and Mexico had been closing in on a deal that would reduce US levies on steel, aluminum and automobiles in return for concessions from Mexico, but progress has slowed due to disagreements over the American levies on vehicles and metals, the report said.
据该报透露，卢特尼克坚决反对大幅下调针对墨西哥汽车的25%关税，也反对将钢铁与铝材的50%关税水平降低，甚至反对削减以钢铁和铝材制成的制成品的关税。
Lutnick has opposed significant reductions in the 25% tariff on Mexican automobiles and the 50% levies on steel and aluminum, and he objected to reductions in tariffs on finished products made of steel and aluminum, the Journal added.
不过，墨西哥贸易副部长路易斯·罗森多·古铁雷斯向《华尔街日报》表示谈判仍取得一定进展；美国商务部发言人亦表示该部始终与墨西哥保持贸易方面的密切沟通。
However, Mexico's deputy trade minister Luis Rosendo Gutierrez told the Journal there was progress in the negotiations, while a US Commerce Department spokesperson told the newspaper the department was in constant dialogue with Mexico on trade.

Mexico's ministry of economy and the US Department of Commerce did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.
