“It's not an economic lifeline for Russia,” the energy secretary told ABC on Sunday. By Jalen Beckford Energy Secretary Chris Wright on Sunday defended President Donald Trump’s diesel deal with Russia as an “incentive” for Moscow to “reduce” its war in Ukraine, adding that after four years of conflict, other attempts to bring both sides to the table had failed.
“This is a carrot to try to end a war. It's not an economic lifeline for Russia,” Wright said on ABC’s “This Week.”“President Trump isn't going to just throw up his arms and say, 'Well, I guess we can never stop it,'” he added, when pressed on why a “carrot” was the appropriate action at this moment. “Clearly, it's a tricky problem.”
Wright argued that sanctions on Russian oil remain in place and that Moscow could only benefit from diesel relief by reducing its war effort or reaching an agreement with Ukraine that would allow it to repair its oil refineries.
Pressed about Trump’s earlier announcement of an energy ceasefire, which both Ukraine and Russia have denied, Wright described an agreement as something the president was still pursuing.
“This is President Trump encouraging Russia: If they want to export diesel, if they want to get the benefits you believe that are about to be showered upon them — the only way they can do that is with an energy ceasefire or some reduction of war effort,” Wright said. Asked again whether a ceasefire existed, he said, “President Trump is always working to move them in the direction to have that kind of a deal.”Wright’s characterization stands in sharp contrast with Trump’s remarks about the ceasefire earlier this week: “Well, they agreed. You know why? Because I said you agreed. That's why,” Trump said Monday when asked by a reporter about the supposed agreement.
Trump announced the temporary lifting of sanctions on Russian diesel earlier this month, the president’s latest effort to lower fuel prices ahead of the midterms. In a separate move Friday, he signed an executive order exempting Russia from key sanctions outlined in the Lindsey Graham sanctions law, which was set to take effect Sunday. In an appearance Sunday on CNN’s “State of the Union,” Wright defended the broader waiver as preserving Trump’s flexibility amid discussions with China over the war and trade.
“He didn't end the Lindsey Graham sanctions. He's just suspended the enforcement of them for now,” Wright said.
Since Trump’s initial announcement of the diesel deal, the move has increasingly drawn bipartisan pushback.
Twenty-two House lawmakers last week urged Trump to implement the sanctions law and scrap the diesel deal, including Republican Reps. Don Bacon, Brian Fitzpatrick and Michael McCaul.
Wright dismissed the criticism when asked whether lawmakers warning that the diesel deal would help finance Russia’s war were wrong.
“In fact, they are all wrong. They don’t understand what President Trump’s doing,” Wright said on ABC.
