Rep. Suhas Subramanyam (D-Va.) is the latest lawmaker to report receiving suspicious mail containing white powder in the last month.
“I can confirm that my office in Leesburg received an envelope containing a suspicious substance. The office was promptly evacuated,” Subramanyam said on social platform X, adding his thanks to the Leesburg Police, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue and their Hazmat team and the Capitol Police for their “swift response.”“These acts of political intimidation have no place in our country,” he continued.
The Virginia Democrat joins dozens of lawmakers and election officials who have reported receiving similar letters containing white powder as a federal probe into the matter is reportedly underway, according to NBC News, citing a person with direct knowledge of the investigation.
Rep. Seth Moulton (D-Mass.) detailed a letter his office received which was addressed to him. His office attached a photo of the letter, containing the same return address as other letters: Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) and the address of a New York City building that the group listed on their membership forms.
“Needless to say, we are not involved with these letters, and we were glad to learn no one was harmed,” DSA spokesperson Priscilla Yeverino said in a statement, per Newsweek.
“Political violence and threats of intimidation have no place in our democracy, and those responsible must be held accountable,” Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-Va.) wrote, after similarly reporting his district office received a letter.
GOP lawmakers have also been targeted as Sens. Pete Ricketts (Neb.), Ted Cruz (Texas) and Mike Rounds (S.D.) confirmed their district offices received letters containing a “white powder substance.”Louisiana Secretary of State Nancy Landry reported in an update that law enforcement found “no evidence of harmful substances” after running tests on the white powder an employee discovered when opening a package.
