Australia’s market watchdog is gathering information about Firmus Grid Ltd.’s failed initial public offering, though it hasn’t yet opened an official probe.

“There isn’t a formal investigation on foot at this point, but we are undertaking enquiries in the usual course,” Chris Savundra the head of enforcement at the Australian Securities and Investments Commission said, responding to questions regarding Firmus at a hearing of the Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence in Sydney Tuesday. The agency has a limited role in listings, ASIC Chief Executive Officer Scott Gregson said during the same inquiry.

The comments are the clearest signal yet that the regulator may open a formal investigation into the collapsed deal to evaluate whether investors were misled during the marketing for what was set to become one of Australia’s largest-ever IPOs. Firmus planned to raise as much as $5.5 billion in the deal that would have valued the company at about $30 billion. Before the deal collapsed, investors were getting signals of healthy demand.
