With high gas prices sending car buyers flocking to hybrids, General Motors Co. is giving the technology another look.

A skeptic of gas-electric vehicles, the Detroit-based automaker now plans to have hybrid models in “multiple segments” in its lineup, Chief Executive Mary Barra told analysts Tuesday on a conference call. The need to hit on high-demand products has gained urgency with GM’s overall sales volumes declining in the US.

“We will have hybrids,” she said. “We’ll talk more about them as we get closer to the launch.”GM offers a few hybrids in China and has previously sold them in the US, but in recent years it has largely kept to the sidelines even as demand has steadily grown — and spiked this year on rising fuel costs. Instead, the carmaker has sought to highlight powertrain diversity through its all-electric and diesel-powered vehicles. And it has bet big on its core gas-guzzler trucks.

As recently as earlier this year, GM signaled it wasn’t eager to jump into the fray for gas-electric vehicles.

“We understand the technology, we have it in other regions,” Barra told Bloomberg Television in January, adding the carmaker planned to offer “a handful” of hybrids. “But right now our focus is really on having the right internal combustion engine portfolio and the right EV portfolio going forward.”Since then, rivals such as Toyota Motor Corp., Hyundai Motor Co. and Honda Motor Co. have done swift business in the hybrid market.

“It’s hard to ignore the success that the hybrid providers and manufacturers have had,” Paul Jacobson, GM’s chief financial officer, said Tuesday in an interview on CNBC. “We understand how, how hybrids are growing and we’re continuing to adapt to this evolving regulatory market.”
